Pottery Barn versus Reality-Thanksgiving Craft

Dear WTMs, I journey once again into my love/hate relationship with Pottery Barn. Today's "PB vs Reality Moment" is Pottery Barn Kids Thanksgiving Craft. Per the "PBK" website, those zany folks want you to spice up your kid's holiday table with homemade centerpieces! According to "PBK" it helps the children feel involved and gives them something to do! I can't imagine a more stressful way to kick off the holiday than to give children glue and scissors before the meal. White Trash Mom has some questions for the peeps at Pottery Barn Kids regarding the nifty craft idea:
  • Who is going to take little Tommy to the ER after Molly pokes him with the scissors?
  • If they kids want to be involved, why not involve them in cleaning the guest bathroom before company arrives? Guest bath is currently a Barbie pool so taking the naked Barbies out of the sink would be nice.
  • If kids want something to do, why not have them help Mom and Dad with the Thanksgiving meal? Or at least get Uncle Bob a beer from the frig while he watches the football game?
  • Glue before a meal? If they eat the glue, they won't eat their dinner.
  • What do you suggest when the newly created centerpiece becomes a football?
  • My nephew thought it would be funny to make the turkey anatomically correct. Would you like to take a photo of his centerpiece for next year's catalog?
  • Do you have any other completely insane suggestions from LALA land?
If you want to read more about the "PBK" craft idea, please click on today's blog entry title. If you can't tell, I think a craft centerpiece created before the meal sounds like a slice of HELL. Please tell me what you think. Am I negative? Wrong? Anyone? Bueller?

OK. I knew I loved you.
I hate "dressing up" the house for the holidays. I just started doing Christmas again. But jeezus! Do I hafta do every holiday? I don't have the patience, money or time...

Yes. It looks nice. But I go out for the holidays...why should I dress my house and then spend the holiday at someone elses dressed up house?

I do like crafts though...I just haven't started those yet either..My daughter's gonna be 3...We only paint. She doesn't use scissors yet...Am I a lazy ass or what?

Thank you for that post!

I hate crafts. I hated crafts when I was a kid. My children are nearly grown and are severly craft deprived. They are not allowed to cut up crap or get out glue, sequins, glitter, pipe cleaners, et al. They always used to trick the teenage babysitter into letting them get the crap out of the top cupboard why we were gone. Newsflash, teenage babysitter, there's a reason it's in the top cupboard, only accessible by climbing on the step stool on top of the table.....duh.

Call me grumpy, that's just the rules around here. The oldest has managed to make it to nearly 20 years old without emotional damage due to lack of craftiness.

I'm with you all the way--get busy with that clorox clean up sister, and put the felt, pinecones, and elmer's school glue away!

I agree....cleaning the bathroom is the best idea. Picking up the shoes and socks strewn across the house, etc. Crafts are stressful. Thanks for the post.

My kids have a ton of crafts supplies but there is no way I want that crap all over the floors and table while I cook the turkey.

Here's my failproof method of giving the kids something to do to get out of my hair: Pop a DVD into the player. It's that easy. And no scissors required.
